Top 10 Highest Grossing Films of 2015 (So Far)
Below you'll find the Top 10 highest grossing films of 2015 so far. There are a couple of surprises hidden among the multiple blockbuster hits, although I'm pretty sure you can guess which popular 90's franchise is number one on the list. Of course, this is not the final list of grossing films in 2015: expect Star Wars: The Force Awakens to claim it's place very high on the list when it's released in December.
10) Ant-Man | Director: Peyton Reed | Distributor: Buena Vista | Gross: $179,887,603
Written by Sean of the Dead's Edgar Wright and starring seasoned comedy actor, Paul Rudd, as the titular Ant-Man, Peyton Reed's Summer blockbuster was never going to flop. The main character may have been tiny, but the profits were huge, seeing a $49million profit on it's $130,000,000 budget!
9) Pitch Perfect 2 | Director: Elizabeth Banks | Distributor: Universal | Gross: $183,785,415
The original Pitch Perfect was an unprecedented success worldwide, so it was a no-brainer that they release a sequel. In terms of revenue, it seems that the cringey marketing campaign for Pitch Perfect 2 did very well too, with the film making nearly $152million on top if it's original budget of $29million, proving, perhaps, that Glee Clubs are still in fashion!
8) Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation | Director: Christoper McQuarrie | Distributor: Paramount | Gross: $195,042,377
So this must be, what, Mission Impossible 53? 54? I dunno! All I can tell you is that Ethan Hunt's popularity shows no sign of waning! Nearly 20 years after the original film was released, the franchise is still going strong. With a budget of $150million, the film could not afford to flop - and it didn't, making a respectable $45million on top of spending!
7) Cinderella | Director: Kenneth Branagh | Distributor: Buena Vista | Gross: $201,151,353
Now, I personally didn't even realise there had been another remake of the classic story, I thought the 'modern telling of a classic tale' market died out last year, but clearly not, looking at the success of 2015's version of Cinderella. The Cate Blanchett-headed fairy tale project had a budget of $95million and made $201million, leaving a gross profit of $106million. Not bad for a century-old princess.
6) The Martian | Director: Ridley Scott | Distributor: Fox | Gross: $214,090,849
Starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars on his own, and directed by veteran sci-fi hero, Ridley Scott, everyone was expecting The Martian to be out-of-this-world… and it was (in terms of revenue)! With an estimated budget of $108million, Interstellar’s younger brother managed to make a gross profit of $106million!
5) Minions | Director: Kyle Balda/ Pierre Coffin | Distributor: Universal | Gross: $335,673,715
These little yellow bastards just won’t go away! After appearing as a marketing ploy aimed at kids in Despicable Me, the Minions have gone from strength-to-strength in terms of merchandise and spin-off sales. The success of this film is proof of how valuable the young children market is; budgeted at around $74million, Minions managed to make a gross profit of approximately $261million. Wow.
4) Furious 7 | Director: James Wan | Distributor: Universal | Gross: $352, 786, 830
Furious 7 could be considered as half ‘full-throttle, adrenaline-filled mayhem for car lovers’ and half love-story for the late Paul Walker. Walker’s last ever film, in a franchise he was so closely endeared to, saw Universal make a profit of around $160million from a $190million budget. A great tribute to a man who lost his life at such a young age.
3) Inside Out | Pete Docter/ Ronnie Del Carmen | Distributor: Buena Vista | Gross: $356,285,830
Mark Kermode has stated that Inside Out should be considered for Best Picture at the Oscars, and who am I to disagree? Pixar’s latest heart-wrenching production takes it’s audience on an emotional journey through an inside looks at… emotions. Directors Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen will certainly have been feeling some kind of emotion after seeing their work of art make a profit of around $180million from an estimated $170million budget.
2) Avengers: Age of Ultron | Director: Joss Whedon | Distributor: Buena Vista | Gross: $459,005,868
The joining together of multiple megahit superstars was never going to be a bad idea was it? Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and co. saw themselves make huge money in their first outing together back in 2012 and they were hoping that lightning would strike twice on this goldmine… of course it did. Although with a budget of $250million, Avengers: Age of Ultron simply had to make bucket-loads of money.

What’s that noise? Why is my glass of water rippling? Oh my God! It can’t be, can it!? Jurassic Park is back! The latest trip to the Jurassic World has long been anticipated by fans of the 90s franchise, and it is testament to the timeless original films that the public rushed to see the futuristic dinosaur resort/ human slaughterhouse in their masses. With an estimated budget of $150million, this behemoth of modern cinema made a cool profit of around $500million, making it the top grossing film of 2015 so far… until Star Wars VII hits our screens!
