Celebrating LGBTQ+ Cinema at the London Film Festival

Other | Tuesday 3rd September 2024 | Francesco

The London Film Festival is soon set to unveil its 2024 program and full line-up, but we are already thinking about which LGBTQ+ films will be included in this year's selection. It’s likely that Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, will be among the highlights, along with Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, featuring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

Reflecting on last year's edition, many LGBTQ+ films captivated audiences. Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers was a standout, earning critical acclaim as one of the best films of 2023. Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, the film tells the heartbreaking story of a screenwriter, Adam, who reconnects with his deceased parents at his childhood home—a deeply moving exploration of love, grief, and human connection.

Saltburn also generated significant buzz, particularly for its mesmerizing dance scene set to "Murder on the Dancefloor." Emerald Fennell both writes and directs this biting satire of wealth and extravagance, with a stellar cast delivering one of the year's best ensemble performances.

William Oldroyd's Eileen, adapted from Ottessa Moshfegh's 2015 novel, surprised audiences with its dark, atmospheric tone. This period psychological thriller centers on the intense relationship between two women—one older, played by Anne Hathaway, and one younger, played by Thomasin McKenzie. Eileen is truly unforgettable.

Celebrating its 68th year, the BFI London Film Festival 2024 will run from October 9th to October 20th and there is great anticipation.
