He may be hailed as one of the greatest directors working today, but Terrence Malick is also so notoriously secretive that even the most dedicated Malick fans probably only have a vague idea of that he looks like.
Which is why is was so surprising that he chose to appear at South by Southwest to promote his new film Song to Song.
Don't believe me? Variety got hold of the following photographic evidence to prove that Malick was indeed at the event.
This is kind of a big deal, because the director of such acclaimed films as Badlands, The Thin Blue Line, The Tree of Life and To the Wonder has even refused to show up at award ceremonies for which he has been nominated.
Also present to promote Song to Song were cast members Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Bérénice Marlohe (Natalie Portman couldn't attend because she's just had a baby).
The film tells the story of two intersecting love traignles set against the backdrop of a rock ‘n’ roll landscape. Like most of Malick's film, it was filmed without a completed script, with the director and cast mostly improvising over the course of the forty day-long shoot.
Song to Song also stars stars Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer, Iggy Pop and Holly Hunter, and opens on 17 March.
