The new film is to set to introduce a whole new cast of characters, in a bid to increase toy sales.
The latest Transformers film (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) grossed over £680 million worldwide in 2011, with the entire series grossing £1.7 billion. However, Hasbro has reported that it was disappointed with its sales of the toys, the characters that the film was based on.
CEO Brian Goldner blamed the poor sales on kids already having their favourite Transformer toys from the films. This is why the new Transformers film (set for release in 2014) will feature a whole new cast of robots, with the story focusing on them.
Speaking about the next Transformers film, director Michael Bay has said that the sequel will take the series in a ‘new direction’, with the possibility of leaving planet Earth. However, he did add that he wanted to keep the film ‘grounded’ and not stray too far into science-fiction. He has also confirmed that this will be the last Transformers film he will make.
The new film will not be featuring Shia LeBeouf who declined to play the hero of the series, Sam Whitwicky. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who co-starred in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, has also declined to return to the film.
