Mel Gibson in talks to direct Suicide Squad sequel?

Wednesday 22nd February 2017 | Idrees

Five full months before the release of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. were reportedly already developing a sequel to the DC extended universe movie.

Whilst this is typically a sign of a very strong film, the movie unfortunately received poor reviews. Rotten Tomatoes scored it a low 19 percent, despite the film's sucess in the box office, making a whooping $745.6 million dollars.

Reasons for such a miserable score could relate to the supposed demanding relationship between then director David Ayer and the studio.

Ayer was reportedly only given six weeks to write the script, and then the movie went under heavy reshoots after the mixed reaction to Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice's dark tone, to bring about a more lighter and humorous tone.

So now with Ayer currently busy directing the upcoming spinoff movie featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Gotham City Sirens, which presumably is a team up movie also featuring Poison Ivy and Catwoman. The studio is currently on the lookout for a new director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is in 'early talks' with the Braveheart and Passion of the Christ director Mel Gibson, to potentially direct the sequel. Hours after attending the Aero Theatre screening in Santa Monica for his Oscar nominated film Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson himself confirmed the report.

“So is this getting close to a deal or is it a first date?” Gibson was asked during a Q&A session, to which he responded, “It’s kind of a first date.”

Other candidates are reported to be considered such as Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), but Gibson still remains to be the front runner.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out as Gibson is known for his R-Rated approach to his movies, which could be a great fit for the future Suicide Squad movie.
