The 73rd Venice Film Festival has started with a bang

Other | Wednesday 31st August 2016 | Francesco

September is a special month for movie-goers. An incredible film festival takes place: the Venice Film Festival. The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia) was founded in 1932, is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the three biggest, alongside Cannes and Berlin International.

The Film Festival is part of the Biennale di Venezia, an arts festival that includes a range of different events like the International Art Exhibition and the International Festival of Contemporary Music. It always takes place in late August or early September in Venice's Lido. Screenings take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and in other venues nearby.

The 73rd Festival will take place from 31 August to 10 September 2016, and La La Land has been assigned the role of opening the event. The movie has started the festival with a bang: there was sustained applause in Sala Darsena as Damien Chazelle’s La La Land’s depiction and ode to old Hollywood created an enthusiastic reaction. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this surreal musical comedy-drama that narrates the story of two wannabe Hollywood stars that fall in love. Damien Chazelle has always been praised for movies as great as the neurotic Whiplash, and apparently La La Land is not a misstep in his astounding career.

The Film Festival will also include much anticipated movies Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival with Amy Adams. She is also in Venice for Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals that will launch on Friday. There will be space also for the visionary Malick’s Vojage of Time, Jackie starring Natalie Portman as the former First Lady in the days following the assassination of John F Kennedy and François Ozon’s Frantz.

Venice is always a great place to start autumn in the cinema world. Considering  previous Golden Globes and Academy Awards nominations, if you obtain critical acclaim and buzz in Italy, you will likely be noticed and included in further awards.
