A rundown of the movies to look out for in April! 

I Am Not Your Negro

In 1979. James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House which was said to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and consecutive assassinations of his three closest friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Unfortunately, Baldwin passed away in 1987, leaving only 30 completed pages of his manuscript.

However, now filmmaker Raoul Peck aims to envision the book with Baldwin was unable to finish, with this new documentary. Peck uses Baldwin’s original words and rich archival material to examine the race issue in America, from the Civil Rights movement to the #BlackLivesMatter movement that resides today.

Neruda

Set in the late 1940s, an inspector hunts down Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, who becomes a fugitive in his own home country for joining the Communist Party. A renowned poet. An unknown inspector. A legendary manhunt.

Neruda stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Luis Gnecco and Mercedes Moran. Directed by Pablo Larrain and written by Guillermo Calderon.

Raw

Coming from a family of vets and vegetarians, 16-year-old Justine starts out as student in veterinary school, where she is exposed to a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. In an attempt to fit in, she strays from the principles taught to her from her family as she eats raw meat for the first time. This will soon bring up terrible and unexpected consequences for Justine as she begins to discover her true self emerging. Not for the faint hearted.

The R rated movie stars Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf and Rabah Nait Oufella whilst being directed and written by Julia Ducournau.

Release Date: April 7th

Fate of The Furious

The eighth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise introduces two Oscar winning Actresses, Charlize Theron and Helen Miren. Theron plays Cipher, the latest villain who tempts Dominic Toretto to go against his family.

The film brings back the original cast, and is directed by F. Gary Gray.

Release Date: April 14th

The Handmaiden

Based on the novel FINGERSMITH by Sarah Waters, The Handmaiden, set in 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, is a tale of a new girl hired as a hand maiden to a Japanese heiress, who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her dominating uncle.

However, the maid is actually a pickpocket, recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese Count to help him seduce the heiress to elope with him where he robs her of her fortune and locks her up in a madhouse. The plan seems to be working until unexpected emotions erupt amongst the handmaiden and the heiress.

The Handmaiden stars Min-hee Kim, Jung-woo Ha, Jin-woong Jo, whilst being directed by Chan-wook Park and written by Seo-kyeong Jeong.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2

Following the success of the first movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 picks up with the Guardians as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos.The team must fight to keep their newfound family together, as they discover new mysteries of Peter Quill’s real father. An exciting new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Vol. 2 brings back the original cast with some new additions, like Kurt Russell. James Gunn returns to write and direct the sequel.

Release Date: April 28th
