With Disney’s forthcoming sequel, Mary Poppins Returns, in the works, they have just released a first look at the nanny herself, who will be played by Emily Blunt.
We can see that she definitely looks the part.
Fans of the1964 musical classic will instantly notice that the peacock-cobalt ruffled coat and the deep rich bird-adorned pink hat, parallel to the one Julie Andrews wore in the original. The only difference would be the carpet bag which has received a full makeover.
Mary Poppins Returns is indeed a sequel to the 1964 film, it aims to further the story of Mary Poppins and the Banks children, Jane and Michael, who are played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw.
This new addition to the story, which was written by David Magee, is set in Depression-era London, where Poppins returns to help the family rediscover joy after Michael suffers a personal loss.
The cast also includes, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack who is a musical lamplighter, Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy, Colin Firth as banker William Weatherall Wilkins, Julie Walters as the housekeeper Ellen, and Dick Van Dyke, who was the star for the original as he is set to make a featured appearance.
Rob Marshall directs the sequel, which will see him reunite with both Blunt and Streep as he recently oversaw Disney’s other film adaptation of Into The Woods in 2014.
Mary Poppins Returns eyes for a theatre release in Dec 25 2018.
