Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit looks like an instant classic

In addition to being the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director for her work on The Hurt Locker. Kathryn Bigelow has also developed a reputation for being one of Hollywood's top directors when it comes to hard hitting, true life dramas. Zero Dark Thirty and K-19: The Widowmaker are also widely considered to be classics.

Her latest film focuses on the 1967 Detroit riots which occurred as a result of three teenage civilians being killed by police. Appropriately titled Detroit, it features Star Wars: The Force Awakens' John Boyega in the lead role, alongside John Krasinski, Anthony Mackie, and Will Poulter.

Detroit opened to great reviews when it was released in the US last month, making it a likely Oscar contender.

The film hits the UK on the 25th of August. The pretty harrowing trailer below gives you an idea of what to expect:
