Upcoming Power Ranger Film Will Feature Hollywood's First Gay Superhero
LGBT superheroes are pretty much unheard of in mainstream Hollywood films, so Lionsgate deserve a huge pat on the back for featuring a gay protagonist in their upcoming Power Rangers from Project Almanac director Dean Israelite. This news comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.
The character in question is the Yellow Ranger, who is portrayed in the film by singer and actress Becky G. Her sexuality will be addressed in a scene where she discusses her relationship problems with another character. At first, it seems as though she's having boyfriend problems, but it soon becomes clear that she's discussing issues with her girlfriend.
Although mainstream comic publishers like Marvel and DC have recently started to embrace LGBT characters, Hollywood has taken a lot longer to come around. But the inclusion of a gay superheroine in a huge $105 million blockbuster should help to teach viewers that it's okay to be who they are.
Given the huge success that other studios have had with their superhero properties, it only makes sense that Lionsgate should also want to get in on some of the action. Should Power Rangers be a hit when it opens on March 24, we might have yet another shared cinematic universe on our hands.
