The Purge is just another home invasion movie. Or is it?

Wednesday 22nd May 2013 | Hanjie

Ah, children. Sometimes they're lovely and make your heart melt, but sometimes they do stupid things that make you wanna smash their head with a baseball bat. For example, letting a wanted stranger into your house on a night where all crime is legal. Which is exactly what happens in The Purge, the trailer of which you can check out below:

In the year 2022, the United States has achieved prosperity with a 1% unemployment rate and an all-time low crime rate. This is done by way of the Purge, an annual 12-hour period where police and hospital services shut down, and all criminal activity -including murder - becomes legal. James and his family have continually survived the Purge by locking themselves in their fortified house, but when their young son decides to save a stranger's live by letting him into the house, his pursuers follow suit and James and his family are forced to defend themselves, while falling into a conflict that blurs the lines between right and wrong.

The premise sounds interesting, but something tells me the film will not explore too much of the socialogical conflicts, instead choosing to settle with generic horror. In any case, this should be good enough entertainment for couples' night outs.

The Purge is due for release on May 31.
