Zoe Saldana is Nina
Thursday 16th August 2012 | Osh
Zoe Saldana, who has graced our screens in films such as Avatar and Star Trek, is to play Nina Simone in new biopic titled Nina. Simone rose to fame during the 50s, giving us classic hits such as 'Feeling Good' and 'Sinnerman', and was also involved in the American civil rights movement in the 60s.
Based on the legendary jazz singer's autobiography I Put A Spell On You, it's been a long time coming to see the project get an official green light. Mary J Blige previously signed on but had to pull out due to funding difficulties which delayed production proceedings. Now it looks like things are back on track, with Saldana replacing Blige. Spooks actor David Oyewolo will play the part of her assistant and lover Clifton Henderson.
A recurring opinion so far seems to be that Saldana, whilst clearly a great actress, is not quite fit for the role of Simone - more sweet and angelic, less gutsy jazz musician. However, Saldana and director Cynthia Mort could have a surprising transformation up their sleeves to silence these doubts. After all, no one initially believed Halle Berry could go 360 hardcore in Monster's Ball and she walked away with an Oscar. Watch this space.
Production is set to begin in October. In the meantime you can catch Zoe opposite Bradley Cooper in The Words.
