After the massive box office success that was the first Insidious movie, fans are delighted at the decision of director James Wan to deliver another instalment in the Lambert family haunting with Insidious: Chapter 2.
The film stars Patrick Wilson, who seems to have turned his hand with some skill to the horror genre after the success of The Conjuring earlier this year, as Josh Lambert. Rose Byrne reprises her role as his wife Renai. This second film begins 2 years after father Josh went into ‘The Further’ to save his son who, born with the gift of astral projection, strayed too far from his body. This second film now focuses on father Josh from whom his son inherited his gift of astral projection. Having gone into ‘The Further’ to rescue his son, new strange behaviour seems to suggest that it was Josh the body but not Josh the man that returned. Though how exactly it takes a family 2 years to realise that their husband/ father is possessed is a mystery. I blame technology.
Though the last film ended with father Josh killing the clairvoyant that was assisting his family under the influence of a malevolent spirit who wished to claim a human vessel, the official summary of the film suggests that ‘the Lambert family is happily reunited’ as the film begins. This continuity error and lack of criminal charges aside, preliminary judgements from the trailer suggest an equally as thrilling sequel to a massively popular horror film. The second film appears to place an even greater emphasis on jump scares and the use of monsters rather than the psychological thrills of its prequel. And whilst no one can forget the amusing moment when the monster in the first film turned out to be a crude Darth Maul look-alike, truly blood-curdling scenes such as the séance from the first film will be sorely missed if similar ones do not feature in the new film.
It is due for release, unsurprisingly on Friday 13th this September.
