Judi Dench and Steve Coogan Star In New Film 'Philomena'

The Pathe trailer for new motion picture ‘Philomena’ has been released this week. Starring Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, 'Philomena' will see both actors in roles that are a far cry from super-spy M, and comical radio host Alan Partridge. The film tells the true-life story of Philomena Lee, a woman forced 50 years ago to give up her son by the Catholic Church, and her life long search to find him again. Coogan’s character, journalist Martin Sixsmith learns of Philomena’s story, and decides to help her track down her son. The original story came into the public domain through the actual Sixsmith’s book ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, which Coogan read, prompting him to co-write the script for the film.

First impressions from the trailer suggest that Dench will give a magnificent and emotive performance as Philomenia whilst Coogan will unsusually be taking on a serious role. Whilst still seeming to have it's humerous moments, this will be a test for the established comic actor to convey the psycology of a man uncovering a poignant story of doctrinal injustice. There is already great excitement surrounding the film, which promises a resonant and beautiful adaptation of a true story.

'Philomena' premieres at the Venice film festival later this month, before coming to UK cinema’s on the 1st November. It looks to be a moving tale of the strength and resiliance of a mother's love, and how for one journalist, it was an adventure and a story unlike any other he had ever told.

The trailer can be seen on the Guardian website:
