5 Films to Boggle Your Mind

Other | Monday 29th February 2016 | Arash

Ever watched a film and left the cinema with a thousand questions about what the hell happened? Well here at Guestlist we’ve compiled a list of films that we think will definitely have you contemplating your very existence.

Memento – A truly incredible film, the story follows Leonard (Guy Pierce), who is hunting down the man who he killed his wife, the only problem is that he has no short-term memory and is unable to create new memories whatsoever.

The film provides a great cast in Carrie-Ann Moss as a bartender, Natalie, often appearing to help the protagonist and Joe Pantoliano, a detective who aids the forgetful main character in his search for the murderer.

Memento constantly keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats, always guessing what’s going on, and along the journey they feel a number of emotions churning inside whilst seeing what our main character goes through.

Fight Club – This dark comedy about the world of underground recreational fighting gives way more depth than what one would expect at a first glance.  The story follows an unnamed protagonist who is sick of his white-collar lifestyle until he meets Tyler Durden, a soap maker who together create the world of “Fight Club.”

With hilarious moments, smart, subtle jokes and dialogue, outrageous moments and gritty fight scenes, Fight Club gives the viewer a lot, and we mean A LOT to take in, and by the end of it, you’re left in awe with a mix of emotions.

Donnie Darko – Now if the first two movies weren’t sure to boggle your brain and make you question everything, this next one is sure to. Donnie Darko follows a teenager (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is introduced to a mysterious figure in a deformed rabbit costume who goes by the name “Frank” who tells him that the world will end in exactly, 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds.

Donnie Darko absolutely makes this list, having received a cult following, it’s hard to see why anyone would not want to see this movie (if not twice, just to understand it!). The eerie atmosphere, complex plot and the events which take place will have you wondering what the hell is going to happen next, and if that’s not enough, Frank alone will have you on constant edge.

Interstellar – Sci-Fi films have unlimited potential to be mind boggling, and Interstellar is a prime example of that.

Interstellar starts off introducing us to Earth in 2067 which has been ravaged by Blight rendering the surface uninhabitable and Joseph “Coop” Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) has been chosen to lead an expedition team through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.

With spectacular visuals that will leave you in awe, intricate layers of the story and scientific explanations to have you questioning the cosmos, it’s no surprise Interstellar makes it onto the list.

If you haven’t already seen Interstellar, watch it as soon as humanly possible, it will have you questioning yourself and the existence of everything around you, as well as give you an insight into just how diverse and complex the universe in which we live in is.

The Machinist – In this dark psychological thriller, Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) is a machinist whose insomnia leads to a workplace accident involving a co-worker (Michael Ironside) which causes him to get fired, this in turn takes Reznik down a road of paranoia and delusion.

The Machinist keeps viewers guessing at every turn what the relevance of the characters are and what’s going to happen next without giving them any real information to go by

This paired with the deep, dark atmosphere and the characters often talking in cryptic messages to Reznik to give the viewer no sense of direction as to where the film is going or where it might end up, this leaves for a surprising turn of a events and a film that’ll definitely leave you in awe.
