Oscar Nominations Brought Forward

Other | Wednesday 19th September 2012 | Osh

The Academy awards have decided to mix things up next year and will be unveiling the 2013 nominees five days earlier than usual.

Consequently, the highly coveted Oscar nominations will be revealed three days before the Golden Globes Ceremony, potentially stealing its thunder. Columnist Pete Hammond wrote: “The Academy’s nomination announcement will get enormous attention just as Hollywood Foreign Press Association is drumming up attention for its own big night”. However, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences explained that the reason for moving the date forward was to: "provide members and the public a longer period of time to see the nominated films".

And this isn’t the only change to the Oscar’s next year. In 2013 most of the Academy’s six thousand members will get the chance to vote online instead of the traditional paper ballot system. The Academy’s chief operating officer, Rio Robertson, explained that having the option to vote online would be interesting in relation to “human psychology and seeing how people respond to change.”

The 85th Academy Awards Ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where it has been held for the last decade. Always an exciting night for the film industry, let’s hope that these changes have a positive effect on the event. Here’s a clip of the film that one the award for Best Picture last year:
