The Spanish film director David Victori was proclaimed yesterday winner of the Your Film Festival’s first edition, amongst 15,000 competitors, receiving a 500,000 dollars Grand Prize to finance his next project. The Guilt, which cost 75,000 dollars, was proclaimed winner by a jury that includes both director Sir Ridley Scott and acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender, who will also act as exclusive producers of Victori’s next project. Fassbender said the reason The Guilt “has it all: a good concept, a really well achieved story, and he knows where to put the camera”. This young director, writer and editor of award winning short films worldwide, lives in LA and has worked previously assisting the famous Spanish director Bigas Luna.
Victori’s short film The Guilt, tells the story of Leo, a man who, after the murder of his wife, gets obsessed with the idea of revenge. The director had the plot’s idea after reading about the Talion Law, which is still valid in countries such as Iran, declaring that the punishment for a crime must be the same as the crime itself. He asked himself: “how would I behave if revenge were legal?” The short, creates an atmosphere of anguish between reality and fantasy and challenges the spectator’s ethics, putting him in the position of judging which will be the “right” choice.
The Festival, organized by YouTube and Emirates, in partnership with the Venice Film Festival and Scott Free Productions, is an online competition with the aim to find the world’s best storytellers. Contestants are asked to submit a 15-minute, story-driven film, then Scott’s company narrows the search to 50 and after, the You Tube community choose the 10 finalists, who fly to Venice to assist at the Film Festival, where a jury make the final decision. This project comes after the success of a previous You Tube-Scott Free partnership in producing the acclaimed documentary Life in a day, and is part of a You Tube aim to push boundaries by mixing online video with traditional arts.
