First up we had the adopted Odinson Loki, as played by the charming Tom Hiddleston, wreaking havoc and now a new supervillian has been added to the line up in the form of the 9th Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. He switching sides, this time turning away from his maverick superhero past in the popular BBC series Doctor Who to plotting destruction in the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor 2: The Dark World.
This isn’t the first time Eccleston has suited up as a baddie, having played Major West in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Destro in G.I. Joe, but he is perhaps best known for his role as the elusive, universe-saving Doctor. Now he is to transform into Malekith the Accursed (alongside Thor God of Thunder and Loki God of Mischief, Norse mythology really does craft the best names). To the uninitiated, Malekith is leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. An accomplished master of socery, he formed an alliance with Loki in the Marvel Universe. It’s probable that this will be reflected in the movie and show him teaming up with Loki, as done in the comics, in an attempt to bring down the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth). But so far any plotline content is pure speculation.
This follow up to 2011’s blockbuster is to be directed by Alan Taylor, who has previously handled episodes of Mad Men, Bored to Death and hit HBO series Game of Thrones. Filming is scheduled to start in a few days so Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Hemsworth and Hiddleston will soon be rolling onto the set to take up their roles once more.
