Robert Rodriguez is bringing Machete Kills – a sequel to gritty spin-off movie Machete, part of his and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse series - to a screen near you and has requited none other than Lady Gaga to play the role of the as yet elusive La Chameleon.
This is the singer’s first credited acting role in a film, previously only having an uncredited alien role in Men in Black 3 and a small role in The Sopranos TV show to her name. The director announced her involvement to the world by recently tweeting: "I just finished working with @LadyGaga on @MacheteKills. She kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!" A movie poster for Gaga’s character see her looking sultry and dangerous, enveloped in wolf-skin and holding a smoking gun.
And Gaga isn’t the only eccentric celebrity on roll-call – the film will also see Charlie Sheen play the President of the United States and Mel Gibson as a billionaire arms dealer called Luther Voz. In the film, the eponymous lead, revived by Danny Trejo, is recruited by the U.S. government to travel through Mexico, a regular location choice for Texan-Mexcian native Rodriguez, on a mission to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have launched a weapon into space.
The director has brought some of the most badass films in recent history to cinema, including Planet Terror – which sees a crippled Rose McGowan go on a zombie killing-spree with a loaded machine-gun in place of a prosthetic leg. It comes as great news then to know that the Machete series is intended to be a trilogy, so there should be one more to follow after Kills. The film will also star Jessica Alba, a frequent Rodriguez collaborator in films such as Machete, Sin City and Spy Kids, Zoe Saldana, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, and Demián Birchir.
Rodriguez’s follow up to acclaimed neo-noir film Sin City¸ which has he has co-written and co-directed with creator Frank Miller, is set for US release on 4 October this year, but the UK date is yet to be confirmed.
Machete Kills is on track to be released in late 2013.
