50 Shades Of Grey is Hitting the Big Screen!

E.L. James’ mega successful 50 Shades of Grey has sold over 31 million books worldwide and due to the massive success of it, it’s now being turned into a film.
The film rights were sold back in March, but the news broke yesterday that producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti have won a bidding war to produce the film. The two have previously worked together on The Social Network, where the film proved to be better than the book itself. With Mike and Dana joining forces yet again, 50 Shades of Grey could be better on the big screen than on paper.
The book has become the fastest selling paperback of all time, passing the record set by the Harry Potter series. With this being the first instalment of a trilogy, it could potentially be one of the highest grossing films too. However, there has been a mixed reaction from newspaper and magazine writers, with The Telegraph criticising the book and describing it as “treacly cliché”, but they did suggest that the sexual politics will have female readers talking about it “for years to come.” April Alliston, a professor at Princeton, said, “Though no literary masterpiece, Fifty Shades is more than parasitic fan fiction based on the recent Twilight vampire series.”
Ian Somerhalder and Ashley Benson have declared their interest in acting in the film, and in June 2012, it was reported that Angelina Jolie was interested in directing. Despite the mixed reactions, it will be produced into a film, which has the potential to be expressed in such a way where audiences will accept the passionate, physical and erotic side of the story, or they will be disgusted at such films being made. Some may even appreciate the fact that it’s being made at all.
With the book getting mixed reactions, there’s no doubt that the film will not be everyone’s cup of tea - but for those willing to open and explore their mind, it could a real treat. The film will bring controversy, but if you enjoyed the book, than the film may be as pleasing to the eye as reading it was to the mind.
