It seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is giving everyone a chance these days. Due to the actually good version of The Incredible Hulk in 2008, you can expect to see more costumed capers coming out soon. Now the attention has now drawn to everyone’s favourite patriotic, shield-flinging superhero. But does the film raise itself to superhero levels, or does it need, like its main character, a dose of the super-serum?
The film revolves around the ridiculously puny Steve Rogers, whose ambition to get into the US Army is evident; you feel his pain each time he is rejected. But what is visually interesting about this film is the cutting-edge CGI used to superimpose a man’s head onto a teenager’s body. Rogers, played by the charismatic Chris Evans, is rendered as extremely skinny and then extremely well-built. It5 is easy to see the positive direction that special effects is heading in, and Captain America is proof of this. Rogers eventually gets wind of the Super-Serum project. His eagerness causes him to sign up, eh changes into an Adonis and voila!! America’s favourite hero is born.
Taking a different role from Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four movies, Evans’ portrayal of the super-soldier is quite dedicated to the comics. Every throw of the vibranium shield pays homage to the comic book character and Evans is easily the perfect choice for such a legend. However, the action that takes place is no as detailed as it should have been; Captain America is a master hand-to-hand combatant yet his fighting sequences were…limited. Setting up Cap’s role in the Avengers, the film is good but could do with significant improvements.
