Daniel Radcliffe is normally known for sporting circular glasses and a scar on his forehead as Harry Potter, but Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro is said to have head-hunted Radcliffe to play Pinocchio in his new film.
‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ director Del Toro announced his new project at Cannes Film Festival two days ago, and Daniel Radcliffe is said to be the star, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Radcliffe is said to be keen to get involved with the Pinocchio film, which will use puppetry and stop-motion animation technology.
True to form, Del Toro is also said to be putting a dark twist on the original storyline. But he did not originally intend to direct the adaptation himself. He said, “I began to realise I was getting more and more involved.”, after firstly starting as Executive Producer. But with a mind and imagination as broad and unique as his, its definitely good news!
Guillermo Del Toro is also interested in Christopher Walken and Tom Waits for their voice talents for the film that is currently in the pre-production process. It is set to be released in 3D 2014 as a “dark, atmospheric tale” according to Del Toro himself.
The dark director has also said “There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children’s narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood. a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio.” It’s probably best to expect something gloomy and gothic then.
Pinocchio, in this latest adaption with delve into the creepier elements of the story never seen in the Disney animated version. In parts of the plot, Pinocchio experiences nightmares with black rabbits, hallucinations and lots of near-death incidents. But it’s not all bad as the directing genius will also make use of the moments of beauty and comedy from the story.
Whether the rumours about Daniel Radcliffe are true or not, Del Toro’s Pinocchio is sure to be a spectacular flick.
