'Okja' Shines A Light On The Dark Side Of The Meat Industry

Other | Monday 3rd July 2017 | David

Most of us turn a blind eye to the horrors of the meat industry, although Netflix's new movie Okja may help at least a few of us to open our eyes for once.

Ahn Seo-hyun stars as Mija, a young girl who befriends a huge creature named Okja, which was specifically engineered to produce large quantities of meat. Needless to say, this is a pretty heartbreaking film.

However, this is not just a film about our unsustainable consumption of meat. As Rappler point out, "Okja strives to be a commentary of today's confused and confusing world," and how the "noise" created by big businesses & the media continues to overwhelm "the little humanities that identify us, such as our capacity to love."

Director Bong Joon-ho clearly has a thing for thought-provoking movies about giant creatures, as he previously brought us the classic South Korean monster movie The Host.

Okja is the director's first English language film since Snowpiercer back in 2013 and also stars Paul Dano, Byun Hee-bong, Steven Yeun, and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton.

The film is now playing on Netflix, so give it a watch and think twice about the amount of meat you consume.
