New trailer about the founding of Wikileaks
Condemned by Julian Assange himself as a ‘massive propaganda attack’, the release of the first trailer for political thriller The Fifth Estate seems to have been met with a fittingly controversial reception. The blockbuster directed by Bill Codon is a fictionalised account of a young Assange founding website Wikileaks and rising out of obscurity by leaking information about US Military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The film stars Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange alongside Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds) as Wikileaks' former spokesman Daniel Domscheit-Berg.
The film, adapted by Josh Singer (The West Wing) has drawn heavy influences from the book written by Domscheit- Berg Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website and additionally from David Leigh and Luke Harding's WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy.
The film is set to be released in October 2014 and is already being compared to films such as The Social Network. The high anticipation that the forthcoming film has stirred has surely only been increased by Assange’s remarks. It is now a question as to whether or not Hollywood is up to the task of conveying one man’s quest for truth, or whether (ironically) they will hyperbolise in the pursuit of a satisfying thrill undermining Assange’s plight.
