Sunday 28th July 2013 saw New Zealand director Peter Jackson wrap on The Hobbit: There and Back Again, the final instalment of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy set to be released in 2014. Releasing Facebook updates and photographs of hobbits, elves, dwarves and a wizard or two, fellow fans of Tolkien from around the world were able to gain insight into the last few hours of raw footage collected from set for Jackson’s latest epic project. The trilogy follows the adventures of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he sets off across Middle-Earth with a band of 13 dwarves to help them reclaim their kingdom from the dragon Smaug and win a share of his coveted, stolen treasure.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (the first in the trilogy), opened in December 2012 to a hugely positive reception earning over $1 billion in box-office receipts worldwide. The trailer for the second film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was released at Comic-Con earlier this month causing even greater anticipation for the next film in the already immensely successful franchise. It is due to be released in cinemas this December. ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy is based on the classic fantasy novel of the same name by J.R.R Tolkien. It is the prequel to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy- a film version of which, Jackson is also credited with directing to much critical acclaim.
The director’s last message (posted with a photograph of himself and his cat ‘Mr. Smudge’) read: “A long day. A great day. Thank you all for being part of it! Now for some sleep!” But, with fans already expressing desires for a film of ‘The Silmarillion’, Tolkien’s mythopoeic narrative about the history of Middle-Earth, Jackson’s respite may be cut short as he prepares to pay homage to Tolkien once more.
