Unfilmed Akira Kurosawa script 'The Mask of the Black Death' to be produced

Nearly two decades ago, the world lost a renowned filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa. However, his work continues to live on as a few of his works have been based on his un-filmed scripts.

This includes the 1998 After the Rain and 2002’s The Sea is Watching.

We can now add another to the list as it has been announced that two major Chinese production companies, Huayi Brothers Media and CKF Pictures, are teaming to produce The Mask of the Black Death.

The script was written by the Yojimbo director, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Masque of the Red Death, in 1977 following production on Dersu Uzala.

The story follows a plague threatened world set in an apocalyptic scenario as a royal family ignores the suffering of those who are affected.

The studios aim for a 2020 release, and a director has yet to be found but the producers are looking for an up and coming filmmaker, and are willing to look outside China.

Whilst we wait, we are able to read Kurosawa’s work as the script is released online.
