It was common knowledge that Logan would be the final time we saw Hugh Jackman take the helm of Wolverine, however, it appears that Jackman is not the only one hanging his boots in the X-Men universe.
Logan will reportedly be the last time we see Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, a role we’ve seen him play since the original X-Men movie, released in 2000.
Stewart announced in a recent SiriusXM Town Hall with Jackman and director James Mangold, that Logan is the perfect sending off for Professor X.
“A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie... And I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Jackman] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing."
"Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Jackman] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”
Stewart had previously left the future of Professor X up in the air, with hints of a possible reprisal in the Deadpool sequel or any other X-Men future films, but this repents all that.
However, unlike Wolverine, Charles Xavier has been recast by James McAvoy who has taken the helm in three X-Men instalments; First Class, Days of Future’s Past and Apocalypse. With McAvoy sharing the screen with Stewart in Days of Future’s Past, so it is safe to say that the future of Charles Xavier is in good hands.
It is still however, a sad sight to see, as we are now experiencing an end of an era with both Jackman and Stewart concluding their 17 years in the X-Men universe. If you needed any more incentive to watch Logan, this surely should be it.
Thank you Patrick Stewart for all your years.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
Logan hits theatres on March 1 in the UK.
