Massive Attack Develops App to Revolutionise Music

Other | Friday 12th February 2016 | Arash

Massive Attack have developed what they call a “sensory music player” app called, Fantom.

The app provides four new Massive Attack tracks, each one uniquely remixed based on the downloader’s location, heartbeat, local time and movement. In addition to this, the rhythm and beat of a track can be changed using the unique data and camera photos in the user#.

These remixes are created by an algorithm which sorts data from sensors in your phone in order to produce unique tracks which can be recorded and shared.

Robert De Naja, also known as 3D, when asked about the app said, “I’d been looking back at some files Mad Professor had remixed but never had been released, and was thinking about what we should do with them and I thought, “Why would we put a remixed album out when there’s algorithms that’ll mix this for you?””

The unlimited potential that this app has seems to drive 3D’s creativity and could very well change the way in which music is created, stored and shared around the world, adding a more personal way of applying and developing music.

3D also mentions that, “At times, there is a separation between art and technology, as though the pair coexist in an uneasy double act. Fantom attempts to bridge this gap.”
