Top Gun 2 is cleared for take-off

Other | Thursday 9th July 2015 | Christina

The Top Gun follow up has been up in the air for a few years but producer David Ellison has now confirmed that the screenplay is being worked on. He also confirmed that Maverick is set to return in a lead capacity and not in a cameo role as previously suspected, saying, “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”

Plot details are thin on the ground at this early stage but Ellison has revealed that this time it’ll be less about dogfighting and more about drones. As he told Collider, “when you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out….It’s drone technology…It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

It’s also been hinted that the film might be released in 3D and IMAX - most big budget action flicks are nowadays anyway – and as Tom Cruise still loves doing all the action, we’re expecting some epic stunts.

And that’s all we’ve got really; no release date, no script, no director and no cast aside from Cruise. But it’s happening.
