Paul Thomas Anderson's cult drama The Master has broken box office records in its opening weekend.
After winning several top awards at the Venice film festival, The Master has broken the records at box-office in its opening weekend. According to Hollywood.com, it made $ 729,745 in five theatres of New York and Los Angeles. These per screen figures set a record, that came out to be around $145, 949 beyond the expectations of anyone of its makers.
Erik Lomis, Weinstein company president of theatrical distribution, said of the film's reception: “We knew we would do a lot of business but we didn't think it would be this big.”
This film casts Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and Joaquin Phoenix as his wayward protégé. This film has caused some controversy by drawing comparisons with scientology. The Master director Paul Thomas Anderson said previously that Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard provided the inspiration for Philip Seymour Hoffman's character in the film.
Despite its controversy, it earned bigger than expected - even with its limited release.
