Out This Month in Cinemas

1. Ted (1 August)
Family-friendly or cuddly this is not. Seth MacFarlane, creater of controversial cartoon comedy Family Guy¸brings us Ted, a funny, filthy, foul-mouthed movie about a boy (adult character played by Mark Wahlberg) who wishes his teddy bear to life and how their relationship develops as the years go by. MacFarlane, already an expert at lending his voice to the eccentric individuals in his works (see Peter, Stewie and Brian Griffin, and Quagmire among others)took on the job of giving a voice to Ted himself. Expect lots of laughs and beautiful contrast between what you’d normally expect to be an innocent film about a bear, and the coarse humour you’re presented with.
2. Offender (8 August)
One of the most hardcore films you’ll watch this year, Offender is an crime thriller which follows working class lad Tommy (played by Joe Cole) who purposely assaults a police officer in order to get banged up so he can exact revenge on the thugs who attacked his girlfriend. The trailer portrays Cole as the perfect man for the job of conveying the life of Tommy, a young man who both loves and hates fiercely, and is willing to go to hell and back to restore rightful balance to his universe. There will be blood, and lots of it.
3. The Bourne Legacy (13 August)
We thought they were over, but we were all of us deceived as the next film in the Bourne line up hits our screens this month, sans Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. Instead we have a new hero, Jeremy Renner of Hurt Locker and Avengers fame, leading the film as Aaron Cross/Kenneth Gibson. As the trailer states, ‘Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg’ and now Treadstone has a new errant agent to contend with. Rachel Weisz stars as the Doctor Martha Shearling and eventual love interest, Ed Norton as bad guy antagonist Eric Byer, and Joan Allen reprises her role from the previous films as Pamela Landy.
4. Brave (13 August)
Ever since Toy Story first reached our screens, pretty much the whole world has engaged in a love affair of appreciation with at least some of Pixar’s movies. Especially at a time when Disney channel has become over run with sickly, tween TV shows of the Hannah Montana type, it’s now more than ever that we look to Pixar to bring in the gold, and it delivers time and time again. Brave will be no exception. It’s fiery and wild-haired heroine Merida, handier with a bow and arrow than any man in Scotland, steps up to break a few traditions. Hopefully, the film will sit nicely alongside its Pixar siblings.
5. The Watch (24 Aug)
Ben Stiller and Richard Ayoade work together again, after Stiller produced The IT Crowd actor’s heart-warming directorial debut Submarine, in this alien-themed comedy. They're joined by Vince Vaughan and Jonah Hill as the Neighbourhood Watch group on the look-out in a town where anyone could be an outerspace creature. Don’t go thinking this is a sci-fi drama offering however. Directed by The Loney Island’s Akiva Schaffer (remember the I’m On A Boat video?) it is very much a crude comedy complete with dick humour and packed with sexually-explicit dialogue.
The period of superhero blockbusters is on hold for now, but it looks like an interesting month for cinema. Enjoy this refresshing break to catch some charming comedies and indie flicks.
