World War Z Finds Another Writer. Then Another.

World War ∞

A little while back, it was reported that the big-budget zombie apocalypse movie World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, had to undergo a series of extensive reshoots, and just as critically an entire rewrite for the third act. Lost and Prometheus writer Damon Lindelof was called in to help do so - or at least, that's what was initially reported.

It turns out, in fact, that Lindelof only came up with the idea for a new ending, and now a more exciting prospect has surfaced: Drew Goddard, who wrote for Cloverfield and also Lost, has been called in for the rewrites. He also directed and co-wrote The Cabin in the Woods with Joss Whedon; this brings about the possibility of World War Z receiving some weird and twisty story beats, which will hopefully alleviate it above its current stuck-in-a-rut state of affairs.

But it's worrying to hear quite how troubled World War Z is; problematic productions usually don't end well, but they can always come out the other side sparkling. Just take Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now - shooting went on for months and months, and the entire process was considered 'Hell' by its cast and crew. However, Coppola's immense directorial talents kept that movie afloat, while it remains to be seen if Marc Forster can do the same. The main thing riding against him? He's not Francis Ford Coppola.
