In its current form, 3D has been around for a number of years now. In fact, there's barely a new blockbuster that comes out that isn't in the popular stereoscopic format. Whatever your views on 3D, there's an even bigger change coming: the advent of 4D cinema.
After what seems likes a bit of an experimental run in their own theatres, the South Korean CJ Group seem to have mastered 4D cinema, and are bringing it to the West. According to the LA Times, CJ Group have struck a deal with a major US cinema chain to install over 200 auditoriums over the next five years, so we'll probably be seeing some of these in the UK in the near(ish) future.
A 4D cinema experience involves moving seats, fans, strobe lights, and nozzles that provide water, mist and scents (the scents include the likes of such odours as 'coffee', 'burning rubber', and 'gunpowder'). Would you want to be part of this new cinema-going experience, or will it simply put you off?
