Caribbean rhythms with a Mediterranean vibe, Alchimie Mediterranee talk to us briefly about what’s happening...
When did you begin your musical journey?
Alchimie were born in 1995. However, each one of us started his music experience much earlier...
How long have you been on the music scene for?
We started playing around in 1996. In the beginning we used to play everywhere trying to collaborate with many musicians on the scene in our city.
What does Alchimie Mediterranee mean? Where does the name come from? Why did you choose it?
Alchimie stands for Alchemy. The Mediterranean is our inspiration. Mediterranean is the sea on which many countries, people and different cultures adjoin with. It’s a mix of culture, civilisation, people and religions.
We chose it because our aim was to mix typical Caribbean upbeat rhythms with melodies coming from the Mediterranean area including lyrics and experiences of people from each country in the Mediterranean.
What are your influences for your sound?
We take inspiration from Steel Pulse amongst others like Black Uhuru.
Who would you like to work with in the future?
Everybody everywhere in the world.
What does reggae/ dub music mean to you personally?
This kind of music is just perfect in order to transmit our message to who is listening.
Have you performed at any events and are there any coming up?
The Alchemy Mediterranee collaborated on the soundtrack of the movie 40% Free Hands of Fate by R. Jacopino in 2010 with Africa United and Modena City Ramblers. Plus, on the festival scene, we have done Rototom Sunsplash 2007- 2010 and Balla coi Cinghiali 2011.
Who have you worked with?
We have toured with The Revolutionary Dub Warriors and Zion Train.
What message are you trying to send through your music?
A message of freedom and peace.
Are there any releases due soon? If so, when can we expect to hear?
Our latest release is coming up very soon. I’d say by the end of June.
We have already finished the recording phase and are just waiting to sign with a label.
Your music sounds like it has a heavy dub influence flowing throughout. What is it about dub music that you love so much?
We love its capacity to send messages full of meanings to its listeners.
Is your sound only known in Italy or have you gone elsewhere with it?
Our sites are visited mainly by US fans as we’ve toured there a couple of times.
What are your plans for your music within the next three years?
We plan to start touring around the world to spread our message and our music.
