Bafta News - Highlights

The Artist, the black and white silent film, has reigned this year at the Bafta awards. The film won seven Baftas including best film and best actor. Jean Dujardin beat the likes of George Clooney and Brad Pitt for best actor whilst Michel Hazanavicius scored the director prize! Best original screenplay, cinematography and costume design also went to The Artist. And if you think seven awards is a lot then just wait for the Oscars where this film has been nominated for no less than ten Academy Awards!

Meryl Streep won best actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. This film also won awards in the make- up and hair categories. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy only came away with outstanding British film and best adapted screenplay – two out of 11 nominated awards. US actress Octavia Spencer won best supporting actress for her performance in The Help where she plays a black maid in 1960s Mississippi speaking of the injustices she faces. And British film Senna won awards for best documentary and editing. The film about the Brazilian Formula One driver took seven years make!
