As December 25th approaches for another year, everything around us becomes a little more festive. Decorations and Christmas lights, ice skating, Christmas markets…the inevitable onslaught of Christmas themed tv specials thank you, Downton Abbey. But, it is also the time when you watch your favourite Christmas films in anticipation for that one joyous day of the year. (C’mon we all do it!)
So let’s take a look at some of those Christmas comedies we all love to watch and have a laugh with (no matter how old they (or we) are.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
We’ve seen them head to Wally World and Europe, so what would Christmas be without the Griswold family inviting us over for a good old-fashioned Christmas dinner?
This is everyone’s go to Christmas film. Clark Griswold, his wife Ellen and their two kids celebrate the very occasion with finding that all important Christmas tree, the hanging of Christmas lights and the arrival of extended family…Clark’s yearly bonus would be the ultimate Christmas gift for them too. What could go wrong?
Home Alone (1990)
Written by the legendary John Hughes, this film is still today regarded as a Christmas classic for young and old.
Kevin McCallister is accidently left home in Chicago when his family head to Paris for Christmas. This is the best gift Kevin could have wished for. Enter two hopeless bandits, a supposed snow shovel slayer living next door, and all the junk food and violent movies one could hope for…Kevin soon realises he is no longer living the dream. When his house is targeted for a Christmas robbery, he must step up and protect the family home in what is truly the best home protection method one could ever think of.
The Santa Clause (1994)
What happens when you scare Santa and he falls off your roof? You become him.
When Scott Calvin, a divorced father learns he must take on the new job as Santa Claus his life changes completely. Not only does he have the task of learning the ropes and the delivery of all of the gifts in time for Christmas morning; he also has to convince those who know him that he is Santa Claus…without them all thinking he has lost his mind!
Love Actually (2003)
All you need is love at Christmas.
Through ten different stories and one fantastic ensemble cast, this is one of the modern day rom-coms people either love to love or love to hate. This London set film showcases many types of love and all the dramas that come from it, all with the backdrop of Christmas intertwining it together in a heartfelt film. From Bill Nighy’s rendition of “love is all around”, Hugh Grant dancing in Downing Street, and one of the most memorable confessions of love ever shown on screen. How could you not want to feel the ‘love’ at this time of year?
Bad Santa (2003)
Everyone loves a department store Santa right?
Willie and Marcus have the perfect set up for their yearly heist by working as a department store Santa and Elf. Although they are not the most conventional team, they have a system that works…until a young boy named Thurman comes along. In a story that could be seen as just wrong and repulsive at times, this is a laugh out loud Christmas film you will never forget. (Nor will you look at chocolate advent calendars the same!) Billy Bob Thorton is at his funniest, with the late Bernie Mac and John Ritter in memorable roles as well.
