12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen makes a comeback with Widows
It may seem hard to believe, but it’s been more than four years since 12 Years a Slave took home three Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture. And in that time, director Steve McQueen has remained somewhat quiet, since the HBO network, unfortunately, decided not to go ahead with his proposed Codes of Conduct TV series.
Widows, therefore, will be McQueen’s first film post 12 Years a Slave, and we’ll know if it was worth the wait when it opens on November 9. As the title suggests, the plot focuses on the widows of four armed robbers who were killed in a botched heist, who decide to team up to finish what their husbands started. The widows will be played by Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, and Oscar winner Viola Davis, whilst the supporting cast includes Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Daniel Kaluuya, and Robert Duvall.
If the success of Ocean’s 8 at the box office has taught us anything, it’s that there’s clearly a market for female-driven heist films, and given McQueen’s track record, we can probably expect Widows to be a big hit with both critics and audiences. Enjoy the trailer below.:
