A Throwback to a Goddess of R&B
In light of Lauryn Hill’s recent scrimmages with the law, I decided to take a nostalgic look at her work. From the beginning of The Fugees in 1994 to her recent release of 'Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)', she has come a long way with her music.
Whatever your stance on her recent events, she killed it in the 90’s. The Fugees remake of Roberta Flack’s ‘Killing Me Softly’ was of course the most famous of their songs and for good reason. ‘Killing Me Softly’ is still addicting with it’s simple beat and Wyclef Jean’s famous “one time” echoes. ‘Killing Me Softly’ became iconic in R&B.
Hill went on to more hits like ‘Everything is Everything’ with the then unknown John Legend. Sweet and powerful, ‘Everything is Everything’ has a simple message that encapsulates Hill’s persona- “Let’s love ourselves then we can’t fail.”
Lauryn Hills most recent track ‘Neurotic Society (Complusory Mix)’ has taken a more aggressive approach but still powerful. The rhymes are sick and Hill’s messages are vibrant all over the track. Whatever her situation, she is very much still in the game and should be recognized for her work. So wherever you are Lauren, please keep making music.
