Fresh drop from YBN with 'The Mixtape'

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 10th September 2018 | Jake

YBN Nahmir's rap career began with him freestyling over Xbox Live to anybody that would listen. Once he had caught some attention, he quickly set up the Young Boss Niggas (YBN) collective.

Their very modern clique was catapulted into the mainstream when Nahmir released the viral sensation 'Rubbin Off the Paint'. Since then a clutch of rappers from the group have enjoyed varying success. The collective have now released their debut joint release, 'YBN: The Mixtape'.

Originally a gaming collective (Grand Theft Auto was the game the group met on), YBN soon turned into a rap outfit. What’s most impressive about the computer game gang is their unmistakable chemistry, all in spite of the members being spread out across America and influenced by different sounds. On 'YBN: The Mixtape', Nahmir displays his trademark Alabaman twang alongside Almighty Jay’s braggadocio and Cordae’s old-school lyrical stylings.

None of the tape’s three main YBN rappers are from the same state, never mind the same neighbourhood, yet the tape works succinctly, with Almighty Jay and Nahmir have a particularly fluent understanding of each other; the single 'Bread Winners' sees the pair go toe-to-toe and offers up one of the tape’s highlights.

There are no tracks with all three rappers performing together, but there is space for a number of features. Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Gucci Mane and Lil Skies all offer consummate appearances. A remix of Nahmir’s second viral hit, 'Bounce Out With That' also feautres and will be a welcome surprise for his hardcore fans. The best feature may be held jointly by Asian Doll & Cuban Doll on 'Double Back', which has the now familiar hallmarks of a Nahmir hit: a deceptively catchy beat with an even more captivating vocal hook.

What’s most impressive about this tape is that despite its length – a healthy 23 songs lasting over an hour – it doesn’t ever begin to feel repetitive, nor tired. Helped by having three rappers with very distinctive sounds, 'YBN: The Mixtape' showcases the talents of the collectives' roster while displaying the flexibility and ability of its star players.
