Soldjasoulz & Ricky Lix "Enemy at the Gates" EP
RnB/Hip Hop |
Thursday 14th April 2016 |
The latest offering from Soldjasoulz [Reds & DPF] sees them bumping heads with fellow Norwich veteran emcee Ricky Lix (Anti-Social/Music Lessons) for a gritty lyrical workout using tight flows to roll out a range of unflinchingly honest personal observations, killer quotable lines and obscure witty references.
The way Lix attacks a beat like a heavyweight champ sits perfectly next to the raw lyricism of Reds and the layer of melody added by DPF’s hooks as they ride effortlessly through a mixture of classic boom bap sounds and modern hip hop production, predominantly handled by Tone at The Hideout Studio. Tone is a name to look out for as he has worked closely with respected UK artists such as Mic Righteous and was recently signed by MistaJam.
Content wise this project ranges from the moody attitude of lead single ‘Eyes of a Ghost’ featuring Yaeo (The London Wave/Coke Boys) to the inward reflection of ‘Loyalty is Love’ and within the layers of lyrics in each track many subjects are touched on, from the responsibility of parenthood to the mentality of people struggling to get by in the UK.
DPF has a solid background in UK hip hop through being signed to iconic label Son Records in the 90s, culminating in his critically acclaimed 2008 solo album ‘’It’ll Never Catch On.’’ This joint is considered a cult classic and made the HHC magazine list for top albums of that year. His live shows are also well renowned having, amongst many other things, played Glastonbury festival and opened up for Public Enemy when they came to Norwich.
Reds came through the ranks of sound system culture and is known as an infamous voice from the UK illegal party scene. Having emceed on sounds week in week out and having his vocals used on some underground hits he decided to start his own imprint Chronic Redeye Music. This street level organisation has pushed thousands of CDs independently and has seen collabo recordings with artists such as Timbo King, Main Flow, Bronze Nazareth and Manage. Enemy at the Gates brings raw hip hop in uncompromising fashion.
