Must-See Media!

Tuesday 28th May 2013 | Laura

Every now and again I come across a piece of media that demands my attention - and Dear Zachary does exactly that from the word go. It has a plot that is as unpredictable as any Hollywood blockbuster, but with one huge difference - it is real. Heartbreakingly real.

The compelling life story of Andrew Bagby – a young doctor who was murdered in 2001 - is told through the film-making of his best friend Kurt Kueme who travels the country far and wide to record memoires told from Andrew’s closest friends and family. When it emerges that the unstable ex-girlfriend of Andrew is expecting his child shortly after his death, the piece takes a different primary purpose in becoming a living, breathing document for the son who will never meet his dad – Zachary.

This twist is only one of several that occur along a somewhat bumpy road in Dear Zachary. I was completely immersed in the lives of those who were most affected by the murder of Andrew, including the desperate story of his parents who are shown constantly trying to gain access to their only grandchild.

This is a documentary film that is NOT to be underestimated. I feel that documentary is often overlooked and not regarded as ‘entertaining’ in ways that fiction films are, but this is a film that makes you experience every emotion I think is physically possible - and I challenge anyone to watch it and not feel completely involved with the life (and death) of Andrew Bagby!
