DVD Release of the week: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Wednesday 10th April 2013 | Hannah
This week sees the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on DVD. Following the huge success of Lord of the Rings, Oscar winning director Peter Jackson returns to middle-earth with The Hobbit. This time around, the uncle of Frodo, Bilbo Baggins becomes an unlikely hero as the audience learns exactly how he became the owner of The One Ring.
In An Unexpected Journey, the audience is introduced to a much younger Bilbo, who is played by Martin Freeman. Much to his dismay and some tricky markings by Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo is forced to play host to thirteen rowdy dwarves. However it is soon revealed that it no ordinary gathering as Bilbo is informed that he has been chosen by Gandalf to join the dwarves on their quest to reclaim their homeland of Erebor, which was taken from them by a dragon called Smaug.
Though An Unexpected Journey is a film which sets the scene, there is still plenty of action going on; expect plenty of sword fighting and jaw-dropping special effects. Jackson has definitely built upon the success of Lord of the Rings, though he has still managed to create a film which feels completely different.
Whether you have seen The Lord of the Rings or not, you can appreciate and watch the film without being utterly lost. An Unexpected Journey provides the perfect introduction to the trilogy but unfortunately fans will have to wait until December this year for the next film.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is available on DVD now.
