It’s been a long journey, but On the Road has finally made its way Hollywood
On the Road is based on the classic 1957 novel by Jack Kerouac, and directed by Walter Salles. Directors have shied away from adapting this novel for fifty five long years, due to the lack of a classic hollywood plot to work with. Like much of Kerouac’s literature, On the Road is propelled by the relationships between people and language, rather a structured series of events or conflicts.
On The Road is based on the travels of a group of friends, Kerouac's alter ego Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Mary Lou (Kristen Stewart), Dean's teenage wife. The novel is a testament to the ideals and lifestyle of the postwar Beat generation, with the characters seeking adventure, questioning the meaning of life and experimenting with sexuality, jazz and drugs.
Director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) has risen to the challenge of adapting this defining novel into a motion picture. With four road-trip style films under his belt, it will be interesting to see if the Brazilian director manages to bring the novel to the big screen without losing the restless energy of the narrative.
On the Road is released in cinemas 12th October.
