When two of the biggest names in Hip Hop and Film collaborate on a project, you know it’s going to be something special.
Will Smith and Jay Z have come together to co produce a hip hop inspired remake of the 1982 film adaptation of the original Broadway musical, Annie.
The film will be set in modern day New York and rising star Willow Smith has been cast for the leading role.
With hits such as ‘Whip My Hair’ and ‘21st Century’ in 2010, 11 year old Willow is following another Smith family tradition by getting on to the silver screen, Her older brother Jaden starred in the ‘Karate Kid’ remake back in 2010.
While Will Smith is providing his unstoppable DNA, Jay Z will provide the soundtrack, no doubt inspired by the original musical which he sample back in 1998 for his single ‘Hard Knock Life’ (Ghetto Anthem)
Actor and writer Emma Thompson has been working on the script for three years and told the BBC. “In the autumn, we get to go to LA to work with Willow and work on more of the script. Jay-Z has already started working on the music. We will start shooting in the spring in New York.”
Being a fan of the original film, I can’t wait to see if these amazing artists can create something worth going to see. Here’s a little taster of an Annie classic ‘It’s A Hard Knock Life’ being taken to the streets.
