Noah

I don’t know about you, but I always found religious education classes dead boring. But what better way to bring some biblical excitement into our lives than with Russel Crowe starring in Darren Aronofsky’s new movie Noah. This depiction though, will be anything but dreary featuring giants, 11ft tall fallen angels with six arms and no wings and evil tyrants.

But let’s face it, a lot of the draw for these movies apart from the amazing visual experience is who is in them and Noah doesn’t disappoint. This film features the likes of Jennifer Connolly, reprising her role and Russell Crowes wife, first see in the Beautiful Mind, written by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Ron Howard. For the young girls out there who appreciate a brunette beauty is Taylor Lerman star of Percy Jackson and the Lighting Theif who will play Noah’s son Ham. English newcomer Douglas Booth as Shem, and eventual love interest of Emma Watson as Noah’s adopted daughter Ila. A personal favourite of mine is Sir Anthony Hopkins as Noah’s grandfather Methuselah and Ray Winstone as Noah’s enemy. It’s an absolute smorgasbord of talent.

The story it looks set to take on a more dark and mysterious flavour then the classical Noah story. And how do we know this? Aronofsky has set out his vision for the story in a graphic novel with the following synopsis:

His name is Noah. Far from the stereotype of the patriarch that one appends the character of the Bible, he looked like a warrior. He looks like a Mad Max out of the depths of time.

In the world of Noah, pity has no place. He lives with his wife and three children in a land barren and hostile, in the grip of severe drought. A world marked by violence and barbarism, delivered to the savagery of the clans that draw their reason to survive from war and cruelty.

But Noah is like no other. This is a fighter and also a healer. He is subject to visions which announce the imminent end of the Earth, swallowed by the waves of an endless deluge. Noah must notify his followers. If man is to survive, he must end the suffering inflicted on the planet and "treat the world with mercy." However, no one is listening.

The tyrant Akkad, who Noah went to visit in the city of Bal-llim, chased him and sentenced him to flee. After consulting with his grandfather Methuselah, Noah decided to rally to his cause the terrible Giants and accomplish the task entrusted to him by the Creator.

Aronofsky as an Academy Award nominated director is known for his surreal, often disturbing and mysterious films, including gems like The Black Swan, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler. With these under his belt Noah is sure to be an experience of biblical proportions that definitely won’t be boring me to death!
