The Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut film about Bosnia, should be a “wake up call”. According to Jolie, the world should act in time to prevent the same scenes of Bosnia happening in Syria. Jolie received a standing ovation by the audience at the premiere.
The film tells the story of a Muslim woman and a Serb man who have a love affair before Bosnia’s war (1992- 1995) and meet again when the woman is a prisoner in a unit of the Bosnian Serb army, commanded by her former lover. The depiction of Bosnia touched the hearts of many who watched in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The film has been described as objective and sincere by war victims but many in a Serb part of Bosnia reacted angrily, accusing Jolie of being biased against them. She denied that her film is anti- Serb.
The war claimed 100,000 lives and the film was shot in 2010 and had its international premiere in New York in December. It goes on for release in Europe this month and will also be screened at the Berlin Film festival.
