Are you interested in film? Perhaps you’re a budding film student yourself? Could you see yourself picking up the prize for best director? Best music video or best short film? Then it seems you may be in luck! In February 2012 the Student Film Festival London (SFFL) will be holding the first London-based international film festival, solely for student film. This is a festival created by enterprising young people for other talented young people. SFFL hope to become a showcase for new talent and plans to provide the guidance and structure that students need to take off in film making. SFFL hopes to encourage a new wave of filmmakers as well as creating a celebration of global talent development in the long term.
The festival will screen around 200 international films and will award artists in eight categories including Short, Animation and Features. Film submitters and audience members are being recruited from all around the world. An audience of 25,000 students and industry professionals are expected to take part the event in London.
When?
The festival will take place from 3rd to the 5th of February 2012, with other events happening throughout the end of 2011 and the start of 2012. Make sure you look out for SFFL around campus throughout your first few months back at university. They may be giving out goody bags! If you just can’t wait that long, why not take a look at some of the other projects that the SFFL are involved in. Such as, on the 15th of November an exhibition in collaboration with UK China Art Association will be held in London to promote contemporary art produced by students in China.
Where?
The Festival will be held across the six campuses of University of the Arts, London (UAL): Europe's largest provider of education in film, art, fashion, design, communication and the performing arts. The award ceremony will be held at the prestigious Empire Cinema with the after party at the fabulous night club, Ministry of Sound.
How to enter
The festival is open for submissions and will accept all films by students and from those that have graduated within the last two years. The submission form and details of how to enter your film can be found on their website. Submissions must be made by the 30th of November.
The Prizes
Prizes for award winners are still to be announced but the word on the street is that there will be mentorship lunches with established filmmakers, short-term internships and discounts to hiring film equipment.
Who’s idea?
SFF London was Co-founded by Naqisa Silva, a film student at the University of the Arts along with Umar Khan, a graduate from Brunel University and Suchi Zhao, a Financial Analyst at the Hermes Group. The idea for SFF London grew out of a need to nurture young filmmakers by enabling them to turn theory into practice within a public and professional domain.
