Cabbage release debut album and it's wickedly good
Releasing their debut album Nihilistic Glamour Shots, the disgustingly punk five-piece, Cabbage hit out hard in this political climate.
With a DIY-aesthetic, the group's latest release draws upon the rippling anarchic tones of GG Allin. Album opener, ‘Preach to The Converted’ has a descending intro that almost bears a resemblance to Blur’s ‘Country House’ however, none of the adorable, boy-charm is present and the violent inspiration bleeds through.
The purposefully disjointed mumble of wickedness found in each track makes not too a dramatic departure from their previous compilation of EPs. Nods towards The Fall and Fat White Family slither throughout the album as they chant, “How long ‘til we take responsibility” throughout ‘Arms of Pleonexia’. The rapid bass lines and treacherous beats make this album a surprisingly pleasant listen, despite the hard-hitting topics and politically charged themes leaving an immediately revolting taste.
The Manchester band spew out a bastardised creation that, although can be difficult to listen to at times, it is still one of the most relevant albums of 2018 so far. The sinister shadow that overhangs Nihilistic Glamour Shots gives an eerie finish and helps create an addictive album that keeps you wanting more. The album is relevant, repulsive and you’ll need disinfecting after.
