Following her recent single, “Witches Brew”, today [5 July 2024] Indian artist-producer-activist Kiss Nuka shares the full, enchanting EP of the same name, Witches Brew, out now via Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label.
Already supported by Mixmag, DJ Mag and more, the four-tracker drops with her symbolic ode to the mystery and wisdom of the Raven, “Dance of the Ravens”. On the track she shares, “It is said that ravens appear to us as a symbol of death and endings, signifying the start of something new. These intelligent creatures carry ancient wisdom, are a bridge between the material and spiritual world, acting as companions in magic and witchcraft.
Speaking on the EP, Kiss Nuka adds, “Women who have pushed boundaries, expressed themselves freely, and challenged expectations have often been feared. As I grow more into my own power, I am inspired by all these amazing female artists, producers, DJs, and women working in music that I've had the pleasure of watching, listening to, and meeting in the past months. This EP is a dedication to the strength and magic of women…Full of light and expansion, yet holding the power to bring darkness when provoked. Here's to the casting of spells, the celebration of the wild women and the sharing of their wisdom.”
She continues, “The lyrical content on the first track I produced for the EP (Witches Brew) informed the overarching theme, the blood red of the Future Bounce artwork inspired the name for one of the tracks, two ravens that came to sit by me on the terrace while I was listening back to one of the demos had the track named after them, and some sounds within that track tweaked to have the raspiness of the Raven's call.”
Based between India and Spain, Kiss Nuka is an experimental audio-visual outlet from Anushka Manchanda - a creative polymath with an artistic legacy spanning editing and directing through to Bollywood playback, singing and screen performances). The Kiss Nuka project is how Anushka distils the world around her – with all its chaos and natural tranquillity into stylistically boundless and immersive musical experiences. Her productions blend ambient soundscapes and four-to-the-floor rhythms with electro-pop vocal lines, pacey breaks and poetic lyricism, culminating in a captivating, signature sound that has seen her release on labels including seminal Ninja Tune imprint, Ahead Of Time.
Under the moniker, she explores her inner raver, constructing live electronic club sets which blend techno, bass, drum & bass and jungle with ambient layers, electro-pop melodies and distorted vocals, all while nodding to her Indian roots. These hypnotic live sets have seen Kiss Nuka perform across esteemed venues and stages, including Mixmag LAB, Boiler Room, Magnetic Fields Festival to name a few, and was tipped among Mixmag's Top 15 Live Acts of 2022 and again in 2023 in their Producers that defined 2023 list. This year, she will perform at Glastonbury’s Greenpeace stage.
Kiss Nuka is also known for her audio-visual activist art, dealing with themes like the rise of the feminine, animal rights, and environmentalism to create cinematic storytelling for both the screen and the live setting. As a director and editor, her thought-provoking audio-visual work has won recognition at the Indian Independent Music Awards, Berlin Music Video Awards, and London Music Video Awards, and was on display at The World of Music Video exhibition at Völkinger Hütte UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside work from iconic artists like Björk, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack and Lil Nas X.
