Moonrise Kingdom Review

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, two moody pre-teens fall in love and plan an escape. Armed with a scout’s knowledge and a whole suitcase of books, the two twelve year olds try and elude the island’s search party consisting of scout leader, Edward Norton, local cop Bruce Willis, social servicewoman Tilda Swinton and the girl’s father Bill Murray - and, forebodingly, there’s a storm brewing.
'Kooky' is not the word for this film. Well, it is, but it inadequately describes just how indie this indie film is. Wes Anderson, famous for The Darjeeling Limited and (oddly) Fantastic Mr. Fox, collaborates again with Roman Coppola of Lost in Translation fame to create another quirky, offbeat comedy-drama that will see loyal fans fall in love with Anderson all over again.
If you’re into your visuals, Moonrise Kingdom is stunning. The unconventional camera shots really make the otherwise fairly typical action scenes shine. It’s not laugh-out-loud, but there are some great moments mainly thanks to the deadpan dialogue and inevitable romantic episodes. Also boasting a great soundtrack, Moonrise Kingdom is the ultimate first date movie, and whether you found the plot itself gripping or not, you're sure to leave with a quirky little smile on your face.
